Tàpies ist zuallererst ein Maler, wenngleich die Malerei nicht sein alleiniges Medium geblieben ist. Sein grafisches Œuvre ist ein Werk, das an sich schon ausreichen würde, um dem Künstler einen Namen zu verleihen, selbst wenn er nichts anderes geschaffen hätte.
Tàpies is first and foremost a painter, although the medium of painting has not remained his only one. His graphic oeuvre is a body of work that would be enough in itself to give the artist a name for himself, even if he had created no other work.

Antoni Tàpies wurde am 13. Dezember 1923 in Barcelona geboren und starb am 6. Februar 2012.
Er ist einer der einflussreichsten Künstler Spaniens, der mit seinem revolutionären Werk ganze jüngere Generationen beeinflusst und visuell ausgebildet hat. 2010 wird er geadelt. Es werden ihm der Ehrendoktortitel der Universität der Künste, Berlin (1979) und der Universität von Barcelona (1988) zu teil.
Tàpies wird als einer der grossen Künstler des 20. Jhdts gefeiert. Selber sieht er seine Arbeiten nicht in der abstrakten Malerei, sondern als Realist, der die Wirklichkeit zu begreifen und darzustellen versucht.
Sein Werk zählt etwa 8.000 signierte Arbeiten. Seine unabhängige Haltung und seine Radikalität in der Kunst demonstriert Tàpies immer wieder durch öffentliche Manifeste. Er fühlte sich stark dem Zen-Buddhismus und den Mystikern hingezogen — insbesondere nach einer langen Lungenkrankheit — und versuchte, in diesem Zusammenhang, seinen Arbeiten mit spirituellen Nachrichten zu untermauern.
Tàpies ist nicht nur spirituell engagiert sondern auch politisch und nutzte seine Kunst für sozial-politische Agitationen, sehr oft mit den vier roten Streifen der katalanischen Flagge, die er als Statement übernahm.
1984 wurde auf Initiative von Antoni Tàpies die Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona ins Leben gerufen.
1976 eröffnet Antoni Tàpies seine erste retrospektive Ausstellung in der Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Die Stiftung und die Galerie realisierten einen grossen Teil seines berühmten druckgrafischen Gesamtwerks: Radierung, Aquatinta, Lithographie.
Brigitte March Stuttgart präsentiert in der Ausstellung ANTONI TAPIES: 100 JAHRE ein vielfältiges druckgrafisches Werk. Im Dezember 2023 wäre Antoni Tàpies 100 Jahre alt geworden. Die Ausstellung möchte den katalanischen Künstler ehren und feiern. Das druckgrafische Werk zeigt wie intensiv und direkt der Künstler handwerklich gearbeitet hat. 1978 wurden in seiner ersten Solo-Show bei Brigitte March Stuttgart dem Publikum zudem auch Unikate erstmals vorgestellt.
Ein Kalenderjahr zuvor, unter dem Titel "Construction and Concept", zeigt Antoni Tàpies 1977 seine Arbeiten in der New Yorker Galerie Martha Jackson und besucht auch während seines Aufenthalts den berühmten Künstler Robert Motherwell, der zum abstrakten Expressionismus zählt — Tàpies sah seine Kunst nicht in der Abstraktion — und produzierte mit Octavio Paz als Sammelobjekt ein Buch mit Gedichten. Die Kunst von Antonio Tàpies spiegelt sein Leben voller Poesie und Kampfgeist für eine offene und kunstvolle Gesellschaft.
Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona on 13 December 1923 and died on 6 February 2012.
He is one of Spain's most influential artists, who, with his revolutionary work, influenced younger generations. He was ennobled in 2010 and awarded from the Berlin University of the Arts (1979) and the University of Barcelona (1988).
Tàpies is celebrated as one of the great artists of the 20th century. However, in times of abstract art, he does not see his work as abstract painting, but realistic with themes depict on reality.
Tàpies repeatedly demonstrated his independent attitude and radicalism in art through public manifestos. He felt strongly drawn to Zen Buddhism and the mystics - especially after his long illness with lung disease - and tried to communicate spiritual messages through his works.
Tàpies was both, spiritually committed but politically engaged. He used his art for political agitation, very often his four red stripes that are related to the Catalan flag. Tàpies adopted the red stripes as a statement for himself. They became his symbolic reference, similar to Joseph Beuys, who used his famous red cross in reference to his concept.
In 1984, the Fundació Antoni Tàpies was founded in Barcelona on the initiative of Antoni Tàpies.
In 1976, Antoni Tàpies opened his first retrospective exhibition at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The foundation worked very intensively with Tàpies and realised a large part of his famous prints: etchings, aquatints, lithographs.
In the exhibition ANTONI TAPIES: 100 YEARS, Brigitte March Stuttgart presents his graphic works before 1978. In this collaboration year with Maeght Zurich, unique works were also presented in this first solo exhibition. Antoni Tàpies would have turned 100 years old in December 2023. The exhibition aims to honour and celebrate the famous Catalan artist. The printmaking work shows how long and intensively the artist worked by his hands.
One year before in 1977, Antoni Tàpies showed his work at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York. The exhibition was entitled 'Construction and Concept’. During his stay, it is said, that he visited the abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell and produced afterwards a collector's book of poems with Octavio Paz. Although Antoni Tàpies did not see his work abstract but realistic. His art reflects his life filled with poetry and reflects the spirit of an open society.
